In Buddhism, the endless knot (Skt. shrivatsa; Tib. dpal be’u) is a closed graphic ornament composed of interlaced, right-angled lines. They overlap without beginning or end, symbolising the infinite wisdom and compassion of the Buddha. It indicates continuity as the underlying reality of existence. The endless knot design is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism and represents the endless nature of the Buddha’s wisdom and the Dharma.

In most Tibetan families, the wooden parts around the doors and windows have been painted black, but they use other colours from nature to decorate the doors and windows. In the highlands of Tibet, the sunlight is very strong, and the winds and dust are very strong, which will cause severe damage to the decorations. Therefore, Tibetans use a curtain-like cloth over the doors and windows.
