The Sea Shell Mani Mala Bead 108 8mm has engraved the mani mantra on each of its 108 8mm diameter beads.
The naga shell is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols and represents the fame of the Buddha’s teachings that spreads in all directions like the sound of the shell’s trumpet. It is a symbol that fearlessly proclaims the truth of the dharma.
The meditation mala is usually held in the left hand and worn with kindness and respect. A bead is counted for each recitation of the mantra, starting with the first bead next to the “guru” bead. The guru bead is usually larger and more decorative. Hold the first mala bead between your thumb and index finger and silently recite a mantra. Using your thumb, pull the next bead towards you to chant the next mantra; then repeat. After completing a complete circuit of the mala, turn the mala about 180 degrees (this takes some practice) and continue as before in reverse order. One avoids going over the “guru’s” account, as doing so is symbolically like going over the teacher’s.
Looking after your mala:
- Please do not wash your mala or wear it while bathing or sleeping, as this can weaken the mala’s thread.
- To clean your mala: gently wipe the beads with a damp cloth and place in moonlight or sunlight to dry.
- When not in use, store your mala in a Mala Bag.
