The Heart Treasures of the Enlightened Ones. Brilliant commentary on Patrul Rinpoche’s poem to one of his closest disciples, in which he delivers a devastating and generous description of the falsity of ordinary daily life. He ultimately exposes that the only solution is to refuse to participate in this swamp of falsity and explains in outline the path of Buddhist practice.

In this book, two great masters of 19th and 20th century Tibetan Buddhism challenge us to critically examine our materialistic concerns and think carefully about how we want to spend the rest of our lives. At the same time, they provide a practical guide on how to follow the Buddhist path, starting from the most basic motivation and culminating with direct experience of reality beyond the reach of our conceptual mind.

The root text is a verse teaching written in the 19th century by Patrul Rinpoche, one of the outstanding teachers of his time. In the commentary, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991) – a holder of the Nyingma school lineage and one of the greatest commentators on Dharma in Europe and North America – extends over the text with his characteristic compassion and uncompromising thoroughness. Patrul Rinpoche’s refreshingly penetrating verses combined with Khyentse Rinpoche’s down-to-earth commentary offer a concise but thorough analysis of the Buddhist path.

PATRUL RINPOCHE (1808-1887) was a great master of the 19th century. Famous for his direct and precise ethos, he abandoned his high monastic position to live with a homeless man, writing this book in a rustic hermitage under an overhanging rock.
