The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel. In the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, devotion to the guru or spiritual guide is considered to be of utmost importance in spiritual practice. These instructions from Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, based on the teachings of the great eighteenth century master and visionary Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa, focus on the devotional practice of Guru Yoga, “Merging with the Mind of the Guru”.
The Guru is like a wishing jewel providing all the qualities of fulfilment, a father and mother giving their love equally to all sentient beings, a great river of compassion, a mountain above worldly concerns unaffected by the wind of emotions, and a great cloud with rain to soothe the torments of passions. In short, he is the same as all the Buddhas. To make any connection with him, whether by looking at him, hearing his voice, remembering him, or being touched by his hand, will lead us to liberation. Having complete trust in him is the sure path to enlightenment. The warmth of his wisdom and compassion will melt the ore of our being and release the gold of our inner Buddha nature.
Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991) was a respected meditation master and scholar of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He is also the author of Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones and Heart of Compassion.
